hello again ,
now that you’ve learned the basics, it’s time to turn it up a notch.
one of the joys of homemade biscuits is the ability to customize them with a variety of flavors and add-ins. here are some ideas to help you create your own unique biscuit creations along with some things to consider when customizing your biscuit recipes.
feel free to start with either of these basic biscuit recipes (buttermilk biscuits | vegan “buttermilk” biscuits) and then go from there by adding…
cheese: add 1 cup of shredded or crumbled cheese, such as cheddar, gruyere, or parmesan.
bacon: mix in 4-5 slices of crisp cooked bacon, crumbled.
green onions: Stir in 1/4 cup of sliced green onions.
fresh herbs: add 1 tablespoon of chopped rosemary, thyme, chives, sage, or parsley.
garlic: Include 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder for a subtle garlic flavor.
jalapeño: mix in 1 diced jalapeño (with seeds removed) for a spicy kick. dry spices like red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper can also be added for some spice.
chipotle: add 1 tablespoon of finely minced canned chipotle chiles in adobo for a smoky, spicy flavor. these can be smashed into a softened stick of butter and then frozen and grated into the biscuit’s flour mix.
black pepper: Stir in 1 teaspoon of coarsely ground black pepper, and sprinkle more on top before baking.
“dry” ingredients like cheese, spices, bacon, green onions, etc. should be mixed into the flour mixture first to ensure even distribution once the wet ingredients are added. “wet” ingredients like sweet potato purée, apple butter, or vanilla can be combined with the buttermilk and added to the biscuits during the step that combines the wet and dry ingredients
